I was making coffee this morning, the sun slanting through the blinds in that way that makes everything look kind of dusty, and I thought about how I should probably clean my windows. Anyway, while the coffee brewed, I found myself scrolling through Instagram, you know, mostly the usual stuff, travel pics, dogs, memes—and then this random post about the FBI popped up. Something about surveillance, I think, but honestly, I just skimmed. But it got stuck in my head, like when you hear a song from your childhood and suddenly remember the lyrics out of nowhere.

So, the FBI. I've always had these vague ideas about them, probably from TV shows or movies or whatever. Like, are they mostly just like, solving crimes? Or is it more complicated? I don’t know, it feels like everyone has an opinion but how do you even start to get an objective sense of what they do? Maybe Wikipedia, but then again, who even writes those entries? And does "objective" even mean anything when people are involved?

I remember reading somewhere, or maybe hearing it, that the FBI was founded way back, like 1908 or something. That might not be right. It was around when my great-grandparents were young, I think. I wonder if they even knew anything about it. Probably not. But I guess it started small, no big offices with drab cubicles and fluorescent lights beaming down. More like a few guys in suits with, what, phones? Probably not even. Weird to think about how much history can just feel like a spiral of black-and-white clichés in my head.

And here's a twist, I’ve read—or maybe just seen floating around in tweets—that they’ve been involved in some really controversial stuff. Surveillance, infiltrating groups, something with MLK—like is any of that true? Feels sketchy the more I think of it. I mean, have they always been the good guys, or is that just a narrative I've subconsciously subscribed to? We wrap these big institutions in myths and then it’s like, do any of us ever really question it? Or maybe we do and then just shrug and move on.

I guess I'm skeptical. About most things, really. Like, even that Instagram post, was it part of some algorithm trying to push me down a rabbit hole? I can't even count how many times I've deleted that app, thinking I'll get some clarity or whatever. Then I reinstall. It’s this weird cycle. Just like how I go through phases of wanting to know all about these institutions and then getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of...stuff. And then backing off. Or maybe that's just an excuse.

Anyway, this isn't going anywhere close to an answer, obviously. Just wandering through thoughts like I wander through the aisles at the grocery store, forgetting what I came for. But maybe that’s okay? Or maybe it's not. I don’t know. I keep thinking I should sort it all out, like line up the facts and the dates and the people involved, but honestly, who has the time or the mental bandwidth?

So, this isn’t a history lesson, clearly. More like a swirl of coffee and dust and half-baked assumptions. But if I figure it out, or even care enough to dive deeper, maybe I'll let you know. Or maybe I won't. Who knows?
